When Mother’s Day Isn’t Easy…

As someone who had to had to go to extraordinary lengths to become a mother and who spent a handful of Mother’s Days worrying if I’d ever get the chance to be one, my experiences showed me just how complicated Mother’s Day can be for many folks.

And so, I want to acknowledge, honor, and send my wholehearted love to:

  • those who have lost their mothers

  • those who have complicated relationships with their mothers

  • those who have lost children or who could not have children

  • those who became mothers via adoption, fostering, surrogacy, donor conception, etc.

  • those who are single mothers or who take on unnecessary mental load

  • those who choose not to be mothers (your choice is valid & beautiful!)

  • those who declare themselves mothers in unconventional senses (fur babies!)

  • those who are mothers with chronic illness, disability, or mental health concerns

  • those who have been disowned or who have needed to cut ties

  • those who did not wholly choose to become mothers but it happened anyway

  • those who are struggling with not feeling like they are a good enough mother

I see you, and I honor you. 🧔
